ASO strategy

ASO for mobile games in 2026: keywords, creatives, LiveOps and soft launch

Players search by genre, a game genre converts worst on each store, and your live events are store listings. The 2026 playbook for studios: genre keywords, gameplay-first creatives, LiveOps on both stores, the new Apple and Google Play game surfaces, and a soft launch that tests the listing as well as the game.

Flat-vector illustration of a translucent landscape phone showing a game store listing with a character icon tile and star row, a floating game-controller tile, a small event card with a coral badge and a coral bar chart, on a full-bleed slate indigo panel

Players downloaded about 50 billion mobile games in 2025, 7% fewer than the year before (Sensor Tower, State of Gaming 2026). Game in-app purchase (IAP) revenue still edged up to roughly $82 billion (State of Mobile 2026). So every store visit is worth more, and paid traffic isn't getting cheaper: Apple Ads search results cost per acquisition (CPA) for Games rose from $3.48 to $6.14 in 2025 (MobileAction, 2026). Organic installs matter more as a result, and winning them is the job of ASO for mobile games.

Game ASO isn't app ASO with a controller icon on top. Players search differently, games convert worse, and their biggest store moments are LiveOps events: the seasons, tournaments and sales that keep a live game running. Yet most game ASO guides still stop at keywords, icon and screenshots.

This guide covers the whole map, from genre keywords to a soft launch that tests the listing as well as the game. It draws on Apple and Google documentation, Sensor Tower, AppTweak and MobileAction data, and our tally of PocketGamer.biz's soft-launch list (updated July 6, 2026). If you're new to the platform split, start with how the two stores rank and convert differently.

Key Takeaways

  • Game ASO runs on four levers: genre-and-mechanic keywords, gameplay-first creatives, LiveOps shown as store events, and a soft launch that tests the listing.
  • Organic matters more as paid gets pricier: Apple Ads Games CPA rose from $3.48 to $6.14 in 2025 (MobileAction, 2026).
  • Treat Game Center and Google's Level Up guidelines as visibility features, not just engineering tickets.
  • In our tally of PocketGamer.biz's soft-launch list (updated July 6, 2026), half of 44 games included the Philippines, where Apple lists English (U.K.), not English (U.S.).

What makes ASO for mobile games different in 2026?

ASO for mobile games gets a game found and installed through keywords, creatives, ratings and store events. It's harder than app ASO in 2026. AppTweak's 2025 US data shows why: the lowest-converting category on each store is a game genre (AppTweak, 2026). Games – Trivia converts at 5.2% on the App Store, and Games – Strategy at 6.6% on Google Play.

The US store averages were 8.56% and 16.15%. Four things set game ASO apart:

  1. Search intent is genre, mechanic and mood. Players type "merge puzzle" or "offline RPG," not "budget tracker."
  2. Conversion is harder. The listing must sell a fantasy and a play loop in a few frames.
  3. LiveOps events are store surfaces. Each season or sale can get its own card.
  4. Platform programs drive a big share of installs. The Apple Games app and Google's Level Up decide much of a game's visibility. On Google Play, Google says editorially-driven discovery brings one-third of game installs (see Google Play Games surfaces).

The market explains the urgency. Sensor Tower reads 2025 as a market shifting "from new-user volume to lifetime value expansion" (State of Mobile 2026). Google Play delivered 42.4 billion game downloads and the App Store 7.8 billion, yet the App Store earned about 75% more game IAP revenue (Sensor Tower, 2026).

Analysis: value per install

An iOS game install carries about 9.5× the IAP revenue of a Google Play install. Divide each store's 2025 game IAP by its game downloads (our arithmetic on Sensor Tower figures). That gives $52.5 billion ÷ 7.8 billion ≈ $6.73 on the App Store, against $30 billion ÷ 42.4 billion ≈ $0.71 on Google Play. For IAP-heavy genres, a point of iOS conversion is worth far more than a point on Google Play, which is where reach, ad-monetized games and cheap technical soft launches live.

Search still carries iOS. Apple says "almost 65% of downloads happen directly after a search" (2022 data) and that over 850 million people visit the App Store every week (Apple Ads, 2026). For the signals underneath, see how the App Store ranks games and apps or our ASO glossary entry.

How do you build a genre keyword strategy for a mobile game?

Build a keyword matrix from genre × mechanic × theme × mode, then climb from specific combinations to head terms. A new game won't rank for "puzzle games" in week one, but "merge farm puzzle" is within reach. Categories help too: in 2026, an iOS game can choose up to two Games subcategories (Apple Developer, Categories).

The iOS primary category also "determines placement on the Apps tab or Games tab" (Apple Developer). Google Play lists 17 game categories and allows "a maximum of five tags" (Play Console Help, 2026). Pick the category players would browse, not the least crowded one.

The game keyword matrix: four columns, one ladder

Diagram of a mobile game keyword matrix feeding a three-step keyword ladder Four columns of example keyword chips. Genre: puzzle, RPG, strategy, casual. Mechanic: match 3, merge, idle, tower defense. Theme: farm, zombie, medieval, cozy. Mode: offline, PvP, co-op, multiplayer. Arrows combine chips into a phrase such as merge farm puzzle. That feeds a ladder: step 1, long-tail combination, weeks 1 to 4; step 2, mechanic head such as merge game, months 2 to 3; step 3, genre head such as puzzle games, month 4 onward with ratings. A legend maps columns to fields: on iOS, genre and mechanic go in the name or subtitle and theme and mode in the keyword field; on Google Play, genre and mechanic go in the title and short description and repeat naturally in the full description. ASO Agency's house framework; chips are examples, not recommendations for your game. Field limits: Apple and Google, 2026.

iOS gives you three ranked fields. Put the genre and mechanic in the 30-character name or subtitle. Spread theme and mode modifiers across the keyword field; see filling the 100-character keyword field. On Google Play, the title (30), short description (80) and full description (4,000) all count, so write natural sentences that repeat your genre and mechanic pairs (see writing the Google Play title and descriptions).

Our house framework is a genre ladder. Weeks 1–4: target long-tail combinations you can actually win. Months 2–3: move up to mechanic heads ("merge game"). Month 4 onward: go after genre heads ("puzzle games") once install velocity and ratings can support them. Track the climb in our free Keyword Rank Checker, and pack the field with the Keyword Field Optimizer.

Why not just buy the head terms? Games CPA ran about 2× the $3.06 category average in MobileAction's 2025 data (MobileAction, 2026; ratio is our arithmetic). Every head-term install you earn organically is one you don't buy.

Three game-specific rules keep the listing clean:

Then mine your reviews. Our free App Review Analyzer pulls recurring phrases such as "offline," "no ads" or "like [a bigger game] but…", and our guide to player language from reviews shows how to sort them. Clear genre and mechanic language also feeds AI discovery, from Ask Play's conversational game search to Apple's Personalized Collections.

Which icon, screenshot and video choices convert for games?

Show gameplay, fast. Google tells developers to show "the actual in-app or in-game experience" within the first 10 seconds of a preview video. That video autoplays muted for up to 30 seconds (Play Console Help, preview assets, 2026). On iOS, app previews also autoplay muted, with up to three per product page (Apple Developer).

Start with the icon, the one asset shown everywhere: a single character or emblem that reads at thumbnail size, with genre cues in color and silhouette. Check it at real size in our free Store Page Preview.

For screenshots, match the way players hold the phone in your game. To qualify for large-format promotion on Google Play, games need at least three 16:9 landscape (1920×1080) or three 9:16 portrait (1080×1920) screenshots. On iOS, a search result shows up to three portrait screenshots but only one landscape one. So decide on purpose. Our screenshot sizes and orientation specs list every resolution.

Treat video as the first frame, not a trailer. Some Google Play game collections show preview videos in a large format, with the 1024×500 feature graphic as the cover. Play Shorts is a "full-screen, portrait, short-form video feed" (Android Developers Blog, May 19, 2026). It's rolling out to users in the US and select developers.

Unique insight: your 17+ shooter needs a 4+ header

Apple's new creative assets, product page headers and search results assets, will also appear in the Apple Games app. They must meet a 4+ age rating "even if your app's rating is higher" and can't show specific pricing or discounts (Apple Developer, asset best practices). So a mature game's header has to sell the fantasy without the violence. The sale belongs in an In-App Event badge. Specs: iOS 27 header and search assets.

Match creatives to user acquisition (UA). Build custom product pages per UA concept, so a player who tapped a base-building ad lands on base-building screenshots. Games using custom product pages saw a 3.5% conversion lift in 2025, against 5.9% for apps (AppTweak benchmark, December 4, 2025). On Android, Google Play custom store listings do the same job.

Don't overpromise. Fake gameplay buys installs that churn, and retention feeds Google Play's ranking factors. Then test with Apple's product page optimization (PPO) and Google Play store listing experiments: 33% of top US games ran two or more screenshot tests in 2025 (AppTweak, July 13, 2026). Our guide covers sample sizes for PPO and Play experiments, and our conversion optimization team runs them.

How do In-App Events and Google Play promotional content turn LiveOps into ASO?

Every LiveOps beat (a season, tournament, collab or sale) can be a store listing of its own. Apple's In-App Events appear on the product page, in search results and on the Today, Games and Apps tabs (Apple Developer, 2026). Top games use them heavily. 51% of top US games ran more than five In-App Events in 2025, against 38% of apps (AppTweak, 2026).

Google Play promotional content "is available for all games" (Play Console Help), and it shows on the Games tab, the Events tab, search and the store listing.

Map your calendar to Apple's seven badges: Challenge, Competition, Live Event, Major Update, New Season, Premiere and Special Event. Then give each event a purpose: all users, attract new users, keep active users informed, or bring back lapsed users. Run lapsed-user events on purpose, because they're re-acquisition you don't pay for.

One LiveOps event, eleven store surfaces

Sources disagree on whether event text helps your game rank. AppTweak (updated September 18, 2024) says Apple considers keywords in the event name and short description, and that "keywords in the long description are not indexed" (AppTweak). MobileAction's 2026 guide names only the event name as searchable. Either way, put a genre or event keyword in the 30-character event name.

Google's own number is vendor-published and dated. Apps that submit promotional content and request featuring "can see over twice as many explore acquisitions during a featuring window" (Google Play). That figure comes from about 6,000 events between November 2023 and January 2024. Read it as direction, not a forecast.

On Apple, pair big events with a nomination; see pairing events with Featuring Nominations.

Our recommended cadence has three parts. Keep one event live or in promotion on each store at all times. Rotate purposes (new, active, lapsed) across the month, and ship fresh event creative every time. Plan it all against our event and promotional content lead times.

Measure each In-App Event in Apple's App Analytics: impressions, page views, downloads, opens and opt-ins. Track each piece of promotional content in Google's report. Our App Store Connect analytics guide shows where the Apple numbers live.

What changed for games on Apple in 2026, including the Apple Games app?

The Apple Games app is now a second storefront for your game. It arrived with iOS 26 in fall 2025, and App Store games appear there automatically. Each game page "includes the same metadata from your App Store product page" (Apple Developer, Games app). In-App Events can appear on its Home tab, game page, library and search.

Unique insight: Game Center is now an ASO decision

Apple says Game Center initialization lets a game "appear in social recommendations on the Home and Friends tabs" (Apple Developer, Games app). It also lets the game appear in a new Top Played chart, which runs in the Games app and on the App Store. Games with Game Center features and In-App Events "are prominently displayed across the Games app," Apple adds. So a build decision now gates store visibility. Put leaderboards, achievements and challenges on the roadmap as store features, not just social ones.

Apple announced Featured Sales & Offers at WWDC26 in June 2026. You propose an in-game offer or limited-time discount through Featuring Nominations, and if Apple's editors pick it, you can choose one of three new In-App Event badges: In-Game Offer, Now On Sale or Try Before You Buy. The program is "Now available in the United States," with "additional regions and storefronts to roll out over time" (Apple Developer, What's New). These badges carry the price that creative assets can't show.

Creative assets and the Asset Library come next. Headers will sit at the top of the product page, while search results assets will "reach people in relevant search results on the App Store and in the Apple Games app" once live. You'll manage both from one Asset Library in App Store Connect. iOS 27 shipped on September 14, 2026 (9to5Mac), yet Apple still listed both as "Coming this fall" on September 28. Brief the 4+ artwork now, and don't report the placements as live.

Two smaller changes affect positioning. Personalized Collections can appear on the Games tab, but they're "currently available in select countries and regions for a limited number of apps" (Apple, WWDC26 guide). Screen Time also sorts any app with Games as its primary or secondary category into the Games time allowance, so edutainment titles should pick secondary categories with care.

The rest is tooling, such as a StoreKit plug-in for Unity and the deprecation of On-Demand Resources in iOS 27. See the full WWDC 2026 rundown, plus our App Store featuring and Today tab entries for the editorial side.

Which Google Play Games surfaces matter for ASO in 2026?

On Google Play, editorial programs drive game visibility. Google says "one-third of all game installs" now come from editorially-driven organic discovery. Level Up features drove "over 2.5 billion incremental acquisitions for featured games" in 2025, Google says. Featured games saw an "average uplift of 25% in installs during the featuring windows" (Android Developers Blog, March 11, 2026).

Google Play game ASO is the store listing plus a program layer. That program changed mid-year. In March, Google tied access to "high-visibility surfaces like You tab and Sidekick" to its user experience guidelines. A June announcement added a revamped Games Level Up with a lower-fee rate card (Android Developers Blog, June 24, 2026). Enrollment opened in Play Console on September 1, 2026.

The current Level Up guidelines set one September 30, 2026 milestone covering Sidekick, 10+ achievements, cloud save, stability and performance. Participation is voluntary. The rate card reaches the US, UK, EEA, Australia and Japan on September 30 (Google Play, Level Up). Our 2026 app store fees guide covers the money.

Our view: treat that list as your Google Play Games checklist even if you don't enroll. Google's program page still presents the You tab, Sidekick, Quests, Leagues, featuring and Play Points offers as Level Up features.

How do you pick soft-launch markets and test your store listing there?

Pick soft-launch markets by the job each does and by the localizations Apple lists for each storefront. In our tally of PocketGamer.biz's soft-launch list (updated July 6, 2026), the Philippines appeared in 50% of 44 games, the US in 43% and Canada in 41%. Among the top ten, Apple lists English (U.S.) only for the US, and English (U.K.) for eight.

How we counted: we took PocketGamer.biz's list of "46 top mobile games in soft launch" (updated July 6, 2026) and dropped two non-game apps. Of the remaining 44, 42 (95%) included Google Play. It's an editorial sample, not a census.

Consultant Claire Rozain told PocketGamer.biz to "forget Canada and Australia" and match monetization to local behavior (January 6, 2026). The article then pairs markets with jobs: the Philippines and Indonesia for ad-monetized titles, Türkiye and Brazil for midcore payments, and Poland for social casino and puzzle. Matej Lancaric adds Poland for midcore and English-speaking markets for early feedback.

Localizations: Apple's storefront table via our Cross-Localization Explorer (checked September 25, 2026). Apple documents a display fallback to your primary language, not a search fallback (see which localizations each storefront indexes). So an English (U.S.)-only soft launch may produce rank data that says little about the US. The fix is cheap. Mirror your US keyword set into English (U.K.), English (Canada) and English (Australia). We haven't run a controlled rank test, so treat it as "don't rely on the fallback," not a proven rule.

Unique insight: ratings don't travel on iOS

Apple shows one overview rating "for each country or region of the App Store" (App Store Connect Help). A bad soft-launch build won't follow you to the US. Neither will a great one. Plan a US in-app rating prompt for launch week; see earning ratings in a new storefront.

On Google Play, open-test "testers cannot leave public reviews" (Play Console Help), so only a production soft launch gives you public ratings there.

Our rule for soft-launch tests is big swings only: icon concept, first-screenshot or video concept, and genre framing. PPO allows up to three treatments for up to 90 days. Apple warns a test "may take longer to reach meaningful results, depending on the localizations you've selected" (Apple Developer, PPO). Small storefronts mean long tests.

To test promotional content, include at least one Events-tab market. Google lists the tab in 17 regions for games (Play Console Help). They include Canada, the UK, Australia, Brazil, India and the US, but not the Philippines, Poland or the Nordics. In our tally, 5 of the 42 Google Play soft launches had no Events-tab market at all.

Our guides cover pre-registration and pre-orders and which languages to localize first, and our localization team can set up both.

What does a game ASO roadmap look like from soft launch to year one?

Run game ASO on the LiveOps clock. Lay foundations before soft launch, run big-swing tests during it and reset at global launch. After that, run monthly events and quarterly creative tests. Apple lets you promote an In-App Event up to 14 days before it starts (Apple Developer, 2026), so the store calendar runs at least two weeks ahead of the game's.

The five steps below are our house process.

  1. Step 1 · Before soft launch Foundations Build the keyword matrix, pick categories and tags, localize for the soft-launch storefronts, and plan Game Center and Play Games Services achievements.
  2. Step 2 · Soft launch Big-swing tests Icon, video and genre-framing tests; a first In-App Event and promotional content in an Events-tab market; rank tracking in the mirrored localizations.
  3. Step 3 · Global launch Reset and nominate Move the winning creative and keywords to English (U.S.) and other locales, file a Featuring Nomination, run the launch event and prompt for US ratings.
  4. Step 4 · Months 2–6 Climb and cadence Climb the genre ladder, keep one event live on each store, run custom product pages per UA concept, and work through the Level Up list.
  5. Step 5 · Ongoing Seasons and audits Quarterly creative tests, a seasonal event calendar, and a full listing audit twice a year.

What is ASO for mobile games?

It's the work of getting a game found and chosen on the App Store and Google Play. The levers are genre and mechanic keywords, gameplay-first creatives, ratings, and store events (Apple In-App Events and Google Play promotional content). A game genre converts worst on each store in AppTweak's 2025 US data. On the App Store, that's Games – Trivia at 5.2%. So creatives and events carry more weight.

How is game ASO different from app ASO?

Players search by genre, mechanic and mood rather than by a problem to solve. On each store, the lowest-converting category is a game genre. LiveOps events act as store listings. And platform programs drive a large share of visibility. Google says one-third of Play Store game installs come from editorially-driven organic discovery.

Do In-App Events help a game rank on the App Store?

They add visibility. Events appear in search results and on the Today, Games and Apps tabs, and players can search for them directly. Sources disagree on whether event text lifts your keyword rankings. AppTweak says Apple considers the event name and short description; MobileAction names only the event name. Put your key term in the 30-character name either way.

Which countries are best for a mobile game soft launch?

It depends on the job. The Philippines and Indonesia suit technical and ad-monetization tests. English-speaking markets give early feedback, and Poland, Brazil and Türkiye suit midcore monetization. In our tally of PocketGamer.biz's soft-launch list (updated July 6, 2026), the Philippines appeared in half of 44 games and the US in 43%. On iOS, check which localizations Apple lists for each storefront.

Should mobile game screenshots be landscape or portrait?

Match the orientation your game uses. Games on Google Play need at least three 16:9 landscape (1920×1080) or three 9:16 portrait (1080×1920) screenshots to qualify for large-format promotion. On iOS, orientation changes how many images a search result shows: up to three portrait, or one landscape. Choose on purpose and test it.

How do games get featured in the Apple Games app?

Every App Store game appears there automatically. Apple says games with In-App Events and Game Center features get prominent display. Game Center initialization also unlocks social recommendations and the Top Played chart. In the US, you can propose sales through Featuring Nominations. Selected sales can carry an In-Game Offer, Now On Sale or Try Before You Buy badge.

What is Google Play Games Level Up?

It's Google's quality program for games. The revamped guidelines opened for enrollment on September 1, 2026. They cover Sidekick, at least 10 achievements, cloud save, large screens, PC, stability and performance. Games that meet them qualify for a lower fee rate card from September 30, 2026 in the US, UK, EEA, Australia and Japan.
