App Category

App Store mechanics

App Category is the store classification you assign your app, which sets the charts and browse lists it competes in and influences which searches it surfaces for.

Both stores let you choose a primary category and, on iOS, a secondary one. The choice does real ranking work: it determines which top charts and category browse lists you appear in, contributes a relevance signal to search, and shapes the kind of user who discovers you. Picking the category where your app is the strongest fit — not the most prestigious-sounding — usually means easier charting and more qualified traffic.

There's a strategic trade-off between competition and fit. A broad, popular category has more browse traffic but brutal chart competition; a narrower, accurate category has less raw traffic but a realistic shot at ranking high and being seen. The best choice is the one that's both genuinely accurate and winnable, and it's worth revisiting if your app's focus shifts over time.

Example

A journaling app classified under the crowded "Lifestyle" category struggles to chart; moving to "Health & Fitness," where it fits and faces lighter competition, lifts both its chart rank and the relevance of its installs.
