Metadata character counter

A live counter for every App Store and Google Play metadata field — app name, subtitle, keywords, promotional text and descriptions — with the exact limit for each store. Paste your metadata and see instantly what fits, what's near the edge and what would be rejected at submission.

All fields within limits

Counts by character (Unicode code point) — the way both stores count Latin, accented and CJK metadata. Nothing you type is sent anywhere; everything runs in your browser. Confirm the final count in App Store Connect or Play Console before submitting.

Quick reference

Every metadata limit, in one place

The exact character limit for each field, and whether the store indexes it for keyword search. On iOS only the name, subtitle and hidden keyword field feed search; on Google Play the title, short and full description all do.

FAQ

Metadata limits, answered

What are the App Store metadata character limits?

Apple's limits are: app name 30, subtitle 30, keyword field 100, promotional text 170, description 4,000 and What's New 4,000 characters. The name, subtitle and keyword field are indexed for search; the description and promotional text are not indexed on iOS, so write those for conversion rather than keywords.

What are the Google Play metadata character limits?

Google Play allows a 30-character app title, an 80-character short description and a 4,000-character full description. Unlike the App Store, Play indexes the full text of all three fields, so keyword placement across the title, short and full description all influence ranking. (More in our guide on App Store vs Google Play ASO differences.)

Do commas and spaces count in the App Store keyword field?

Yes — every character in the 100-character keyword field counts, including the commas between terms. Spaces after commas are unnecessary and waste characters, so separate keywords with a single comma and no space (budget, planner, tracker) to fit the most terms. Don't repeat words you've already used in the name or subtitle.

What happens if my metadata is over the limit?

App Store Connect and Play Console block you from saving an over-length field, so it stops your submission rather than truncating silently. The subtler risk is display truncation within the limit: long names and subtitles get cut with an ellipsis on smaller screens, so put the searchable and persuasive words early in each field.

Does this count characters the same way the stores do?

It counts by character (Unicode code point), which matches how App Store Connect and Play Console count the Latin, accented and CJK characters used in app metadata. Always confirm the final count in the store's own console before submitting, since both stores can change their counting and limits over time.
