Apple tells developers what its search results look at: your title, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus "downloads, ratings and reviews, and more" (Apple Developer, App Store search). As of September 2026, it has never said how much any of them weighs. Most ASO advice, from agencies and AI assistants alike, fills that gap with confidence it hasn't earned.
The same ASO questions keep coming back, and the answers travel without sources. Apple Ads boost organic rank. Ship an update every two weeks for a ranking bump. ASO is dead now that people ask ChatGPT. Some of these claims are true, some half true, and a couple are myths. They all sound equally sure, so the wording won't tell you which to budget around.
Below are 20 of those questions. Each gets a verdict, an evidence grade, a dated source and a link to the full guide. For the long version first, read how the App Store actually ranks apps.
We graded 20 App Store Optimization questions founders often ask AI. Apple or Google confirm 10 of the answers themselves. Public tests back 5, practitioner consensus carries 3, and 2 are myths. ASO isn't dead: almost 65% of App Store downloads happen directly after a search (Apple Ads, 2022 data). Apple Ads help organic installs only indirectly, and the public test behind that claim switched off all paid channels at once.
Key Takeaways
- Apple or Google confirm the answer to 10 of these 20 questions. 5 rest on public tests, 3 on practitioner consensus, and 2 are myths (our grading, September 28, 2026).
- ASO isn't dead: almost 65% of App Store downloads happen directly after a search (Apple, 2022 data).
- Apple Ads help organic installs indirectly, through downloads and chart rank. That's tested, not confirmed by Apple.
- No public test shows an update lifts rank on its own. The penalty for not updating is confirmed.
- Apple confirms which inputs it uses, never how much they weigh.

How do we grade the evidence?
Each answer carries one grade: the strongest evidence behind it. As of September 2026, Apple or Google confirm the answer to 10 of the 20 questions themselves. Public tests back 5, practitioner consensus carries 3, and 2 are myths. On 8, neither platform answers directly (ASO Agency analysis, September 28, 2026).
- Confirmed by Apple or Google: the platform's own documentation or an official statement says it; we link and date it.
- Tested: at least one public, dated test or dataset supports it; the platform hasn't said so.
- Consensus: practitioners agree, with no platform statement and no public test. A working hypothesis.
- Myth: platform documentation, platform data or a public test contradicts the popular belief.
The rules: a Myth needs a Confirmed or Tested source against the belief, or it stays Consensus. Vendor data can support Tested, labeled with its sample and date. Confirmed means a factor exists, not that it's big. Grades change only through the changelog, and they reflect our judgment on the date shown, not Apple's or Google's (see our editorial standards).
The evidence ladder: four grades, and what moves an answer up
Apple's search page names its inputs, from title to ratings, but publishes no weights, so every Confirmed answer is a yes-or-no gate. Any claim about how much a lever moves rank is Tested at best, and "Apple confirmed X boosts rank by Y%" is wrong by construction.
How the 20 answers grade out
That pattern is the finding. Founders budget around three questions: how long ASO takes, whether updates boost rank and whether conversion rate moves it. None has a first-party answer or a public test. Treat them as hypotheses for your own app.
We drew the 20 from question-form search results, Apple Developer Forums, Quora and four competitor FAQ and myth pages. The fifth: the 261 FAQ questions in our 50 earlier guides (our count, September 28, 2026).
Is ASO still worth it in 2026?
Yes. Over 850 million people visit the App Store every week (Apple Ads, 2026), and Apple still reports that most downloads start with a search. What's new is the company search keeps: extra ads, Personalized Collections and AI assistants that recommend apps. None of them replaces the store listing. Q1 to Q3 grade the evidence.
Q1 · Is ASO dead?
Evidence grade: Myth · Source: Apple Ads, 2022 data; AppTweak, August 2026.
No. Almost 65% of App Store downloads happen directly after a search (Apple Ads). That's Apple's worldwide 2022 data, the latest year it publishes. And when ChatGPT recommends apps, the App Store listing is its most-cited source, with 37.6% of citations in AppTweak's analysis of 125,000+ US responses from May 2026 (AppTweak, vendor-published).
Everything around search has changed. Since March 2026, up to two ads can show per query (AppTweak). Personalized Collections appear in select regions, and header images and videos for search results are "Coming this fall" (Apple Developer, What's New). That's what WWDC 2026 changed for discovery: more surfaces, the same listing underneath.
Q2 · Does my App Store listing affect what ChatGPT recommends?
Evidence grade: Tested · Source: AppTweak, August 12, 2026.
Yes, measurably. AppTweak analyzed 125,000+ ChatGPT responses across 9,489 app prompts (US, May 2026). The App Store listing was the most-cited source behind app recommendations, at 37.6% of citations, ahead of the open web (27%) and Google Play (9.5%) (AppTweak, 2026).
Why Tested, not Confirmed? OpenAI doesn't document its sources, and this is one vendor dataset: one market, one month, ChatGPT only. For the rest of the citation mix, read the full source breakdown.
Q3 · How long does ASO take to work?
Evidence grade: Consensus · Source: AppTweak, October 2025; Apple; Google Play.
Plan on about four weeks per iOS metadata change, and longer for results to compound. That's a practitioner norm: AppTweak says iOS keyword rankings "stabilize around 4 weeks after a new build is uploaded" (AppTweak, 2025). The only first-party clocks are review and processing: on average, Apple reviews 90% of submissions in under 24 hours (Apple, App Review). Google Play processing takes "a few hours or up to seven days" (Play Console Help).
No public test measures time-to-result across apps, so this stays Consensus. Plan with a realistic ASO timeline, week by week, and decide upfront how to measure whether it worked.
What actually moves App Store and Google Play rankings?
Apple names the inputs: text relevance plus user behavior, meaning "downloads, ratings and reviews, and more" (Apple Developer, App Store search, 2026). Google names quality floors, such as a 1.09% user-perceived crash rate (Android Developers, 2026). Neither publishes weights, so the six answers below grade whether a lever counts, not how much it moves rank.
Q4 · Does Apple Search Ads improve organic ranking?
Evidence grade: Tested · Source: Ju, Zhao & Aral (MIT), arXiv, first posted April 2025, revised July 2026.
Not directly, and Apple has never said it does. There is an indirect effect. In an MIT study of one US game developer, switching off all paid ads cut organic installs by 20–30%, apparently because paid installs had been lifting its category chart rankings. The study associates every $100 of spend with 32 paid and 2.2 organic installs, about 7% on top (our arithmetic: 2.2 ÷ 32).
Read the limits before you quote it (arXiv 2504.16151). The data covers 6 apps on iOS and Android from 2018–19, and the developer switched off search, social, display and in-app ads together. The study measured category charts, not keyword ranks, and never isolated Apple Ads, so "Apple Ads lift organic installs 20–30%" pins an all-channel result on one channel.
What $100 of paid spend returned, paid vs. organic
Apple's Apple Ads overview makes no organic claim (checked September 28, 2026), though downloads are on its search input list, so the mechanism fits. For a holdout test you can run, read the full Apple Ads halo evidence.
Q5 · Does updating my app improve its ranking?
Evidence grade: Consensus (the boost; the penalty is confirmed) · Source: Apple, App Store Improvements; Google Play, 2026.
Not by itself, as far as anyone has shown. No public test isolates an update boost. What's confirmed is the downside of not updating. Apple flags apps not updated in three years that also miss a minimal download threshold over a rolling 12 months, then sends a removal notice and gives 90 days to update (Apple Developer). And on iOS, a new version is the only way to change your name, subtitle and keywords.
So the penalty is confirmed and the boost is consensus. MobileAction says an update "can temporarily boost your app's ranking" but gives no data (November 2025). Our reading: updates correlate with ranking moves because they carry the metadata changes, not because Apple rewards the release.
Google Play has a confirmed floor too: since August 31, 2026, existing apps must target API level 35 to stay available to new users on newer Android devices (Play Console Help). More in Google Play's quality signals.
Q6 · Do ratings and reviews affect App Store ranking?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Apple · Source: Apple Developer, App Store search, 2026.
Yes. Apple lists "ratings and reviews" among the user-behavior signals behind its search results (Apple Developer, App Store search), but it doesn't publish the weight. In AppTweak's 2025 benchmark, apps rated below 3.5 stars ranked for three times fewer top-10 keywords, a vendor-published, correlational figure with no published method (AppTweak, 2025).
Apple doesn't say whether it indexes review text. Start with the ratings and reviews playbook, then Apple's AI-generated review summaries.
Q7 · Does conversion rate affect keyword ranking?
Evidence grade: Consensus · Source: Apple Developer, App Store search (inputs only).
Probably, but nobody outside Apple has shown it. The App Store search page names downloads and "ratings and reviews, and more" as behavior signals (Apple Developer). Conversion rate isn't on the list, and no public test separates it from download volume. Improve it anyway: conversion multiplies every impression you already earn, whatever it does to rank.
The levers sit on the product page itself: see what moves conversion rate.
Q8 · Can crashes or poor performance hurt my ranking?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Google · Source: Android Developers, updated September 21, 2026; Apple.
On Google Play, yes. Google's Android vitals set bad-behavior thresholds at a 1.09% user-perceived crash rate and a 0.47% ANR rate. Above either one, "Play may reduce the visibility of your title" and may show users a warning on your store listing. For both, the per-phone-model threshold is 8%. On the App Store, Apple says it immediately removes apps that crash on launch (Apple Developer).
Google publishes the thresholds, not the size of the visibility cut (Android Developers, 2026). For the rest of the quality picture, read Google Play ranking factors.
Q9 · Can I buy installs or reviews to rank higher?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Apple and Google · Source: App Review Guidelines; Google Play policy, 2026.
No. Both stores ban it. Apple may expel developers who "inflate your chart rankings with paid, incentivized, filtered, or fake feedback" (App Review Guidelines). Google bans inflating "product ratings, reviews, or install counts by illegitimate means" (Google Play policy). Paid user acquisition is legitimate. Install farms, incentivized ratings and paid reviews aren't.
For earning ratings the allowed way, use the App Store ratings and reviews guide.
How do keywords and metadata get indexed?
Apple's 2026 help pages say your app is searchable by "app name, app subtitle, keywords, and your company name" (App Store Connect Help). On Google Play, listing text does that job: a 30-character title, 80-character short description and 4,000-character full description (Play Console Help). Most metadata myths come from mixing up the two stores.
Q10 · How many keywords can an app rank for?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Apple (the limits) · Source: Apple Developer; App Store Connect Help, 2026.
Apple publishes no cap on rankings. The limit it documents is on indexable text. Each localization gives you a 30-character name, a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field, and Apple lists 10 localizations for the US storefront. That's up to 1,600 characters of indexable text in the US, plus your company name (our arithmetic: 10 × 160).
Words also combine within one localization, so one field covers many phrases (see the cross-localization tests in Q15). Sources for the limits: Apple Developer and the App Store localizations table. Decide how many keywords to target per locale, then fit them with the Keyword Field Optimizer.
Q11 · Does the App Store index my app description?
Evidence grade: Tested · Source: App Store Connect Help, 2026; Appfigures, June 2025.
Not for App Store search, as far as the evidence shows. Apple says your app is searchable by name, subtitle, keywords and company name (App Store Connect Help). The description, it says, "will be used for web engine search results" (Platform version information). Apple never says outright that search leaves the description out, but Appfigures' June 2025 analysis of thousands of keywords found no sign that the App Store indexes descriptions (Appfigures, archived copy).
Apple's field list is strong evidence but not an explicit no, hence Tested. Google Play works the other way: "The text in your store listing helps users discover your app" (Play Console Help). For a field-by-field view, read what each field indexes.
Q12 · Are screenshot captions indexed on the App Store?
Evidence grade: Tested · Source: ConsultMyApp, June 16, 2025.
Probably not, at least not broadly. Appfigures reported caption indexing in June 2025, but ConsultMyApp tested 64 caption phrases across 8 category-leading US apps: 36 didn't rank, existing metadata explained 27, and 1 was a possible anomaly. Apple hasn't said either way, and AppTweak notes "no official confirmation from Apple" (ConsultMyApp; AppTweak).
64 screenshot caption phrases, tested for rankings
Write captions for the person scrolling, and keep keywords in the fields Apple documents. Caption layout for both stores is in the screenshot sizes guide.
Q13 · Should I repeat my main keyword to rank higher?
Evidence grade: Myth · Source: Apple Developer, App Store search and Creating your product page (duplicate words); App Store Connect Help, Platform version information (name and company name); Google Play Metadata policy, 2026.
No. Apple's App Store search page tells you not to repeat words from your name, subtitle or category in the keyword field. Its product page guide lists "duplicate words" among things to avoid. App Store Connect Help adds that your name and company name are already searchable, so you shouldn't duplicate them in the keyword list. Google Play's metadata policy says to "avoid using repetitive or unrelated keywords," and warns that repetition can lead to a policy violation.
Plurals are the classic trap: Apple treats "climbs" and "climb" as duplicates (Apple). Our guide covers the edge cases: the keyword field rules, fact-checked.
Q14 · Can I use competitor names as keywords?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Apple · Source: App Store Connect Help; App Review Guideline 2.3.7.
No. App Store Connect Help says "Names of other apps or companies aren't allowed" in the keyword field (Platform version information). Guideline 2.3.7 tells you not to pack metadata with "trademarked terms, popular app names," and says Apple "may modify inappropriate keywords at any time" (App Review Guidelines). If a rival's brand matters, bid on it in Apple Ads, which never touches your metadata.
Hidden from users isn't hidden from App Review. Our paid-and-organic keyword guide shows where competitor terms belong.
Q15 · Do keywords combine across localizations?
Evidence grade: Tested · Source: AppTweak and Phiture tests, 2022 (page updated November 2025).
No. Words form phrases only inside one localization, per tests AppTweak ran with Phiture using invented keywords. Put "bus" in English (US) and "metro" in Spanish (Mexico), and an app ranks for each word in the US, but it "will most likely not be indexed for 'metro bus'" (AppTweak, 2025). Apple documents which localizations each storefront lists, not how they combine.
Keep phrase partners in one localization. The cross-localization map shows which fields count in each storefront, and the free Cross-Localization Explorer checks one market.
Q16 · Does promotional text help App Store ranking?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Apple · Source: Apple Developer, Creating your product page, 2026.
No. Apple states that promotional text "doesn't affect your app's search ranking so it should not be used to display keywords" (Apple Developer). Use its 170 characters for timely conversion copy instead, since it's the one text field you can update "at any time without having to submit a new version of your app" (Apple Developer).
The App Store character limits guide lists every field's limit and which fields search reads.
What needs an app update, and what do ads and custom product pages change?
Four documented Apple rules trip founders up, all current as of September 2026. Keywords change only with a new version. Ratings reset only if you choose to. An ad can sit above your #1 organic result. And since October 2025, up to 70 custom product pages can rank in organic search (Apple Developer News, 2025).
Q17 · Can I change App Store keywords without an app update?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Apple · Source: App Store Connect Help, 2026.
No. Keywords sit in your version information in App Store Connect, and Apple says some properties are editable "only when the app status is editable" (App Store Connect Help). Promotional text is the documented exception: you can update it "without requiring an updated submission" (Platform version information). Google Play listing text needs no new build, but changes still go through processing that can take up to seven days.
| What you change | How it ships |
|---|---|
| App Store: name, subtitle, keywords, description | With a new version |
| App Store: screenshots and app previews | With a new version, once the current one is approved |
| App Store: promotional text | Any time, no submission |
| App Store: custom product page keywords | Assigned any time, from the keywords in your latest approved version |
| App Store: creative assets (Asset Library) | Submitted apart from app submissions; Apple still lists them as "Coming this fall" (checked September 28, 2026) |
| Google Play: title, short and full description, graphics | No new build, but processed before publishing: "a few hours or up to seven days" |
Sources: App Store Connect Help on screenshots and custom product pages, 2026. For the next exception, read about creative assets without a new build.
Q18 · Will an app update reset my ratings?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Apple · Source: App Store Connect Help, Reset an app overview rating.
Only if you choose to. When you release a new version, you can reset your overview rating, and the reset applies to all countries or regions at once. After you release the version, "you won't be able to restore the previous rating" (App Store Connect Help). Written reviews stay visible, and your product page shows that the rating was recently reset.
Nothing resets unless you select the option. If you're renaming the app as well, check what carries over when you change versions.
Q19 · If I rank #1 organically, can a competitor's ad still appear above me?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Apple · Source: Apple Ads Help, Search results ads, 2026.
Yes. Per Apple, a search results ad "can appear either at the top of their search results or further down the page" (Apple Ads Help). Advertisers "can't select or bid for a particular ad position," Apple adds. So a competitor bidding on your brand can sit above your #1 organic result, and Apple now runs extra ads further down the results too, up to two per query by AppTweak's count.
Apple announced the extra placements on December 17, 2025, in "Announcing more chances to make a first impression" (Apple Ads News), and AppTweak reported the rollout from March 3, 2026 (AppTweak). To decide whether defending your brand pays, read how to test whether brand bidding pays or see our Apple Search Ads management.
Q20 · Do custom product pages rank in organic search?
Evidence grade: Confirmed · Apple · Source: Apple Developer News, October 29, 2025.
Yes, since October 2025. You can publish up to 70 custom product pages and assign keywords to each. Pages with assigned keywords "can appear in search results for those selected keywords instead of your default product page" (Apple Developer News). The keywords come from your latest approved app version, and a page is searchable only after it's approved and set to visible.
Which page to build first is a prioritization problem, and the CPP framework works through it.
Frequently asked questions
What does "Confirmed by Apple" mean on this page?
Apple's own documentation or an official statement says it, and we link and date the source. It confirms that a factor exists or a rule applies, not how much it weighs. Apple's search page lists inputs such as title, subtitle, keywords, downloads, and ratings and reviews, but it publishes no weights (Apple, 2026).
How is "Tested" different from "Consensus"?
Tested means at least one public, dated test or dataset supports the answer, such as ConsultMyApp's 64-phrase caption test (2025). Consensus means practitioners agree, but nobody has published a test or a platform statement. This page has 5 Tested answers and 3 Consensus answers, as of September 28, 2026.
How often are the grades reviewed?
Monthly, and within a week of any Apple or Google documentation change. Every change goes in the grade changelog on this page, with the date, the old and new grade, and the source that triggered it. Last full review: September 28, 2026, when we graded all 20 questions for the first time.
Can I cite these answers?
Yes. Cite the page as: ASO Agency, "20 App Store Optimization questions founders ask AI, answered with evidence," asoagency.io, September 28, 2026. For the underlying fact, cite the primary source we link, such as Apple's App Store search page or the arXiv paper. Grades reflect our review on that date.
Why aren't pricing or "which agency" questions here?
They don't have an evidence grade. We picked questions that recur in search results, Apple Developer Forums, Quora, competitor FAQ pages and the 261 FAQ questions in our 50 earlier guides. Pricing depends on scope, so it belongs in a conversation, not in a graded answer.
The bottom line
Most ASO advice sounds equally sure of itself. The evidence isn't:
- Inputs, not weights: treat "Apple confirmed this boosts rank by X%" as a red flag.
- Apple Ads: the halo is real but indirect, and it was measured on category charts, not keywords.
- Updates: the penalty for not updating is confirmed. The boost isn't.
- Indexing: on iOS, name, subtitle, keywords and company name are the documented search fields. On Google Play, listing text is.
- Is ASO dead? No. Search starts most App Store downloads, and ChatGPT reads your listing.
