GEO for apps: how to get your app recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini

Ask an AI assistant for the best app for a job and it writes a shortlist. Here's what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode read before they write it, where Siri fits in iOS 27, the six fixes that get your app named, and how to measure it without trusting a screenshot.

Flat-vector illustration of a translucent chat-answer panel whose answer line resolves into one rounded app-icon tile with a white star row, joined by thin white connector lines to three small source tiles, a store-listing card with a coral citation dot, a globe website tile and a speech-bubble community tile, on a full-bleed deep teal panel

Ask ChatGPT for "the best budgeting app" and you get a handful of names, often with the store pages it drew them from. In August 2026, AppTweak surveyed 1,000 US adults and found that 10% first heard of their most recent download from an AI assistant. That's level with Google search (10.7%) and social media (10.4%), and half the app stores' 20% (AppTweak, The state of AI app discovery, September 2026).

Most app teams haven't checked what assistants say about them. In webinar polls AppTweak published in March 2026, 29% of app marketers had never checked their app's AI visibility, and only 6% had a strategy in place (AppTweak, How to get your app discovered in ChatGPT). AppTweak didn't disclose the sample size. Meanwhile, vendors sell "AI visibility" dashboards.

This guide shows how to get your app recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It separates what the data shows from what vendors claim, with six fixes ordered by impact and a prompt panel to measure them. Most fixes start where a fixed-price ASO audit starts: the store listing.

TL;DR

58% of US adults have used an AI assistant to find or choose an app, and 10% first heard of their latest download from one (AppTweak, 2026). App store pages supply 47.5% of ChatGPT's citations when it recommends apps. So GEO starts with your listing, then your website, press, Reddit and reviews. Siri's App Intents serve installed apps, not discovery.

Key Takeaways

  • 10% of US adults first heard of their latest app from an AI assistant, level with Google; the stores lead at 20% (AppTweak, 2026).
  • Store pages supply 47.5% of ChatGPT's app citations. Your iOS description, unindexed for store search, is the text AI reads most.
  • ASO gets you ranked; GEO gets you described. Different text does each job.
  • App Intents help retention, not acquisition. Measure with a fixed prompt panel, not screenshots.

What is GEO for apps, and how is it different from ASO?

GEO (generative engine optimization) for apps means getting AI assistants to recommend your app and describe it correctly. In September 2026, AppTweak framed the goal as making sure your app is "understood and recommended, not only ranked" (AppTweak, GEO for apps). ASO competes for a position in a results list. GEO competes for a place in a shortlist the assistant writes itself.

AppTweak groups the inputs into three areas: store presence (title, category, description, reviews, release notes), owned web (website, FAQ, changelog, docs) and external authority (third-party mentions, listicles, comparisons, reviews). One rule sits above all three: "one core intent, described the same way on the app store listing, the website, and third-party sources."

Why does consistency matter? Assistants judge task fit, not keyword match. A user asks for "an app to split rent with roommates," not "bill splitter." The assistant then looks for an app whose sources plainly say it does that job, for that person, and is still maintained. Repeating a keyword proves none of that.

GEO doesn't replace ASO, and it isn't a ranking you can buy. Stores still lead first-touch discovery two to one, and the factors that decide App Store rank are different signals. Rank signals get you into the list. Describe signals get you into the answer.

How much app discovery actually happens in AI assistants?

More than most teams assume, and less than the hype. In AppTweak's August 2026 survey of 1,000 US adults (Prolific panel, about ±3 points), 58% had used an AI assistant to find or choose an app or game. 21% use one half the time or more when choosing a download, and 41.3% never do (AppTweak, The state of AI app discovery).

First touch is the telling number. Asked where they first heard of their latest download, 20% named the App Store or Google Play, 10.7% Google search, 10.4% social media and 10% an AI assistant. AI sits level with Google and social. It isn't close to the stores.

Which assistants? 39.2% of respondents had used ChatGPT when deciding what to download, 30.9% Gemini, 8.3% Claude, 7.6% Copilot and 2.6% Perplexity. Scale explains it. On February 27, 2026, OpenAI said ChatGPT had passed 900 million weekly active users (Search Engine Land, 2026). In July 2026, Alphabet put the Gemini app at 950 million monthly active users and AI Mode past 1 billion (Alphabet, Q2 2026 earnings remarks).

Now the counter-signals. Offered one app an AI recommends and another topping store search, only 17.3% would pick the AI's choice; 69.8% would check ratings and reviews first. Of 602 respondents who'd received an AI app recommendation, 35.6% checked store reviews next, and just 9.6% downloaded right away.

So in 2026, AI assistants are a real but not dominant first touch for apps. They sit level with Google search, at half the stores' share, and people rarely trust them without a store check. AI starts the journey; the product page closes it.

How do ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Siri decide which apps to recommend?

They read the job the user describes, pull sources from the web or their training, and write a shortlist. Each reads differently, so being named by one says little about the others. In March 2026, Growth by Kev ran 195 queries through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Only 16.2% of the 1,230 recommended apps appeared on all four, and 54.8% on just one (Growth by Kev, AI App Discoverability Index 2026).

That test used API models, not consumer apps with live web search, so read it as proof that models differ.

How each assistant finds apps

ChatGPT retrieves live pages when search is on, and store pages lead its citations. For your own site to appear, OpenAI says "we recommend allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site's robots.txt file," and changes take about 24 hours (OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI crawlers). Perplexity always cites and leans editorial: in the Growth by Kev index, 62.4% of its citations went to editorial content, 14.2% to YouTube and 9.5% to app stores.

The Gemini app on Android returns Google Play cards with ratings and download counts (9to5Google, June 2026); see how Ask Play and Gemini pick Google Play apps. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's web index, so classic SEO carries over. Siri AI can "leverage information from across the web," Apple says, but its app hooks serve installed apps.

Assistant What it reads most Your lever Status (Sep 2026)

Stale answers are a real risk. In the same index, Mint, which Intuit shut down in March 2024, was still recommended 21 times, at an average position of 1.7.

What sources do AI assistants cite when they recommend apps?

Mostly your store page. AppTweak's August 2026 study covered 125,000+ ChatGPT recommendation responses across 9,489 app prompts (US, May 2026 data). The Apple App Store was the most-cited source at 37.6%, and Google Play added 9.5%: 47.5% combined. The open web supplied 27%, and 22.6% of answers cited nothing (AppTweak, AI app discovery & LLM search).

Games lean harder still: AppTweak found "app store pages accounted for around 60% of cited sources on game-related queries." Why do stores dominate? They're on the open web. Apple launched the App Store on the web at apps.apple.com on November 3, 2025 (MacRumors, 2025). AppTweak notes that "the publicly indexed versions" of store pages "are content that AI search engines retrieve and cite directly."

We checked apps.apple.com/robots.txt on September 25, 2026. It has a single "User-agent: *" block, no rules for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended, and sitemaps for apps, charts, stories and groupings. It blocks search-result URLs, not product pages. Every public App Store product page is open to AI search crawlers by default.

The rest comes from the web around you. AppTweak says Reddit is "frequently retrieved in most AI and search engines," which is why Reddit threads become AI citations. And Perplexity cites stores for only 9.5%. The store page is necessary, not sufficient.

Steps 1 and 2: how do you make your store listing readable for AI?

Write one sentence that says what your app does, for whom and why it's better, then make your description say exactly that in its first lines. In AppTweak's May 2026 data, the App Store alone supplied 37.6% of ChatGPT's app-recommendation citations. That makes your description the text an assistant most likely reads about you.

Step 1: Write the one-sentence definition

Job, audience, core strength. For example (illustrative): "[App name] helps freelancers send invoices and get paid faster." Reuse it word for word on your listing, website, press kit and profiles, so a model has less reason to guess.

Step 2: Rewrite the description for extraction

Put the audience in the first line. Name three to five use cases the way users phrase them. Tie each feature to an outcome, and cut superlatives like "all-in-one" that give a model nothing to quote. Each sentence should stand alone.

Unique insight

The description paradox. On iOS, the app description isn't indexed for App Store search; it's conversion-only. Yet it's the biggest block of text on the apps.apple.com page, and that page is ChatGPT's most-cited source for app picks. Meanwhile the keyword field, the core of iOS search ASO, is private metadata no crawler can see. ASO gets you ranked; GEO gets you described. Different text does each job.

So don't stuff keyword-field terms into the description; write for comprehension. Your title and subtitle still carry search and appear on the web page too. Keep the category honest, and write real release notes: they're dated proof the app is maintained.

Google Play is simpler. Play indexes the long description, and AppTweak's tests point to it as Ask Play's main input, so one rewrite there serves store search, Ask Play and ChatGPT.

Steps 3 to 6: how do your website, outside mentions and reviews back it up?

Give assistants a canonical page to quote, and outside sources that agree with it. In AppTweak's May 2026 data, the open web supplied 27% of ChatGPT's app-recommendation citations, and editorial sources made up 62.4% of Perplexity's in Growth by Kev's index.

Step 3: Make your website the canonical source

Allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI separates it from GPTBot, which crawls for model training, so you can block training and still appear in ChatGPT search. Don't block Googlebot, since AI Overviews and AI Mode read Google's index. Then build one clear page with your core workflows, who the app is for and who it isn't for.

Add a "how do I…" FAQ, a public changelog, and SoftwareApplication or MobileApplication structured data. Google requires name, offers.price, and aggregateRating or review for rich results (Google Search Central, Software app structured data). It won't guarantee a mention, but it removes guesswork about price and rating.

Step 4: Earn third-party corroboration

Assistants trust claims that other sources repeat. Keep review-site profiles accurate, pitch category roundups and "X vs Y" comparisons, and time press to real product moments. Community threads count too, if they're earned, not seeded.

Step 5: Get reviews that name the use case

Since iOS 18.4, Apple has used a multi-step LLM system to summarize reviews on the product page. Each summary is "an informative paragraph between 100 - 300 characters in length" (Apple Machine Learning Research, 2025). That summary sits on the page assistants cite most, and 69.8% of people say they'd check ratings and reviews before trusting an AI pick (AppTweak, 2026).

Ask for reviews right after the user gets value. Run them through the free App Review Keyword Analyzer to see the phrases users choose, then fold the best into your description. For prompts and timing, see a reviews strategy that lifts rating and volume.

Step 6: Keep every source fresh

Update your changelog, release notes and comparison pages on a schedule, and fix wrong facts where you can. Remember Mint: models repeat their sources, current or not. Skip the shortcuts too. None of the studies cited here tested llms.txt files or "AI SEO" tricks for apps.

What changes with Siri AI and App Intents in iOS 27?

Siri AI makes your app usable by voice and context. On current evidence, it doesn't make it discoverable. Apple launched Siri AI in beta on September 14, 2026, in English first. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish follow "next month." Siri AI "will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS" (Apple Newsroom, September 2026). Apple says it's "custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models."

The developer hook is App Intents, which Apple says connect apps to "personal context understanding, app actions, and onscreen awareness" (Apple Newsroom, June 2026). Adopt IndexedEntity and your app's entities enter the system semantic index, letting Siri "match based on meaning, not just text" (WWDC26, Build intelligent Siri experiences with App Schemas).

Apple's launch partners, WhatsApp and Audible now, with Microsoft Outlook, Notability and Tripsy to follow, all act inside apps the user already has. Siri AI can answer from the web, so a "best app for X" question may draw on ChatGPT-style sources. Apple hasn't said whether Siri names apps you don't have installed, and we haven't tested it.

Reach is limited too: daily usage limits apply, and AppleInsider reported plans for expanded access "for a fee in the future" (AppleInsider, September 2026). On Android, AppFunctions lets apps act as on-device MCP servers for system agents, but it's "currently available in experimental preview" (Android Developers Blog, May 2026).

Unique insight

ChatGPT gets you chosen; Siri keeps you used. App Intents connect installed apps to Siri AI, which makes them a retention and re-engagement surface, not an acquisition channel. If your app has repeat-use workflows, ship intents for your three to five core actions and judge them on retention, not installs.

Should you build a ChatGPT app for the app directory?

Only if your core job works as a conversation. For most consumer apps, not yet. OpenAI opened app submissions and an in-ChatGPT app directory on December 17, 2025 (OpenAI, Developers can now submit apps to ChatGPT). By March 30, 2026, Bloomberg reported about 300 integrations, apps that were hard for users to find, and little traffic reaching partners (Bloomberg, via PYMNTS). OpenAI conceded "there are areas where the developer experience needs to improve."

So what is a ChatGPT app? It's a set of tools, built with the Apps SDK on an MCP server, that ChatGPT calls inside a conversation. Per Phiture's March 2026 teardown, submission needs a 64 × 64 icon, a 30-character name, a privacy policy and a verified website. In directory search, "the name holds the most weight," and long-tail queries fare poorly (Phiture, ChatGPT App Directory).

Business tools dominate: 61% of the 123 apps in ChatGPTAppsRank's hands-on editorial directory were tagged Business in July 2026 (ChatGPTAppsRank, State of ChatGPT apps 2026). A simple rule:

Paid placement is a separate track. OpenAI says ChatGPT ads are clearly labeled, kept separate from the response, and don't influence its answers (OpenAI, Our approach to advertising). You can buy a spot next to an answer, not inside it.

How do you measure whether AI assistants recommend your app?

Run a fixed prompt panel on a schedule. Screenshots don't count because, as AppTweak put it in September 2026, "wording, context, and timing all change the answer." AI visibility isn't store rank either. In April 2026, ConsultMyApp found only a moderate correlation, r ≈ 0.39, between AI visibility and category rank across 60 iOS apps (ConsultMyApp, Does better AI visibility deliver App Store success?).

Strong brands such as YNAB stayed visible to AI despite lower ranks. ConsultMyApp's verdict: AI visibility "is not a silver bullet, and it is not yet more important than being visible where most users still search: the App Store."

Here's a panel you can copy. It's a method only: we're not reporting results from it.

Element Specification
Prompts (40) 10 category ("best [category] app"), 10 job ("how can I [job] on my iPhone"), 10 comparison ("apps like [competitor]"), 10 qualified (free, for beginners, offline)
Assistants ChatGPT with search on, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode; Siri AI where available
Runs 3 per prompt per assistant, fresh logged-out or memory-off sessions, US English, over 2 days
Record Mentioned (yes/no), list position, description accuracy, cited source types, competitors named
Metrics Mention rate, average position, share of voice against 3 to 5 competitors, citation mix, error rate
Cadence Monthly and after every listing or site change; log date and model version

Give qualifiers their own bucket: in Growth by Kev's index, adding "free" moved the share of free apps from 31.9% to 70.5%. Forty prompts, four assistants and three runs make 480 answers a month, which a spreadsheet handles. Nobody has published a reliable lag between a listing change and new answers, so measure yours.

Frequently asked questions

How does ChatGPT decide which apps to recommend?

It reads the job described in the prompt, searches the web and writes a shortlist. In AppTweak's study of 125,000+ ChatGPT responses (US, May 2026 data), store pages supplied 47.5% of citations and the open web 27%. Clear, consistent descriptions help it match your app to the right requests.

Does ASO still matter if people ask ChatGPT for apps?

Yes, arguably more. The App Store listing is ChatGPT's most-cited source for app picks at 37.6%, and 35.6% of people who got an AI recommendation checked store reviews next (AppTweak, 2026). The keyword field still wins store search, while your description and reviews shape how assistants describe you.

Can Siri recommend my app in iOS 27?

Apple hasn't said it does. Siri AI, in beta since September 14, 2026 and English first, acts inside installed apps through App Intents and answers questions using the web. Treat App Intents as a retention lever. Whether Siri names apps a user doesn't have installed is unconfirmed.

Should I build a ChatGPT app?

Only if your core task finishes in a conversation. The directory opened in December 2025 and had about 300 integrations by March 2026, but Bloomberg reported the apps were hard to find and sent partners little traffic. For most consumer apps, fixing your store page and website comes first.

Does Google Play's Ask Play work the same way?

It's related, but it runs inside the store. AppTweak's August 2026 tests point to your long description as Ask Play's main input, with reviews and your website likely feeding it too. On Google Play, one well-written description serves store search, Ask Play and ChatGPT at once.

How do I track AI visibility?

Run the same 40-prompt panel monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, with three fresh runs each. Record mention rate, position, accuracy and cited sources. Don't read it as store rank: ConsultMyApp found only a moderate correlation (r ≈ 0.39) across 60 iOS apps in April 2026.
