ChatGPT ads for app installs: an early look for Apple Ads advertisers

ChatGPT Ads can now count your app installs, but it can't sell them to you by the install. Here's what OpenAI confirms, what's only reported, what nobody documents yet, how it compares with Apple Ads, and how to test it without fooling yourself.

Flat-vector illustration of a translucent chat window with a small ad card beneath the answer, a dotted path to an app icon tile with a download glyph, and a coral bar chart, on a full-bleed plum panel

In less than 200 days, ChatGPT ads went from a US test to a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate (OpenAI, August 31, 2026). On September 23, OpenAI said they run in more than 60 countries (OpenAI, 2026). And since July 24, app marketers can attribute installs from them through their mobile measurement partner (AdTechRadar, 2026).

If you already spend on Apple Ads, called Apple Search Ads until April 14, 2025 (Apple Ads News), someone is pitching you this channel. Much of what's written about it mixes OpenAI's docs with vendor claims that no primary source supports.

This early look pulls them apart, sets the channel next to Apple Ads, and ends with a four-week test. For context, see where paid channels fit in an iOS marketing stack. Claims a CFO might repeat carry one of three labels:

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT Ads can count installs but not buy them. There's no install objective, and conversion campaigns bill per valid click, with impression billing in beta (OpenAI Developers, 2026).
  • iOS install attribution is click-only through your MMP. IDFA isn't supported and SKAdNetwork isn't documented.
  • At OpenAI's suggested $3–$5 bids, it's very unlikely to beat the $4.06 US Apple Ads median CPI (AppTweak, 2026), by our arithmetic. Test it; don't swap budget.

What are ChatGPT ads, and who sees them in 2026?

ChatGPT ads are sponsored cards shown below ChatGPT's answer, labeled and kept separate from it. OpenAI shows them only to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. It doesn't show ads "to users on Plus, Pro, or any Business plan" (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). US testing began on February 9, 2026 (CBS News, 2026), and self-serve buying opened on May 5.

Last verified against OpenAI's docs: September 28, 2026.

Confirmed · OpenAIOpenAI skips accounts "where the user tells us or we predict that they are under 18." It also skips chats near "sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health or politics" (OpenAI, January 16, 2026).

Confirmed · OpenAIA standard chat_card has a 3–50-character title, a body of up to 100 characters, one image and a destination URL (OpenAI Developers, Ads API, 2026). There's no field for an app icon, a star rating or a Get button.

ReportedHow often do ads show? SE Ranking ran 50,006 US commercial prompts on Free and Go accounts on July 23, 2026. It found ads on 25.94%, always one ad below the answer, and 14.35% were off-topic (SE Ranking, August 10, 2026). In an academic audit of 3,602 ads from March 2026, about 23% came from the census "Information" sector, which includes software (Lurie et al., arXiv, 2026).

OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches "more than 1 billion weekly active users" (OpenAI, August 31, 2026), but not how many sit on ad-eligible plans. Its stated policy is that "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you" (OpenAI, January 2026). So buying ads won't get your app recommended. That's a separate job, covered in how ChatGPT decides which apps to recommend.

Can you run app-install campaigns in ChatGPT?

Not as a campaign type. ChatGPT Ads has three objectives: Views (CPM), Clicks (CPC) and Conversions. Conversions optimizes toward one tracked event, but you pay "per valid click, not per conversion" (OpenAI Developers, 2026). Impression billing for Conversions is "currently in beta" (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). Installs enter as an app_installed event that your server or MMP sends back. So you can count installs. You can't buy them by the install.

What does OpenAI support for apps?

Confirmed · OpenAIapp_installed and app_opened are two of 13 standard events. They're "available through the Conversions API only," sent with action_source set to mobile_app, and "not supported by the JavaScript Pixel currently" (OpenAI Developers, Supported Events, 2026). "Native mobile SDK setup and mobile data sources are not currently supported," so installs arrive server-side, usually from your MMP.

Confirmed · OpenAIOpenAI's help center, as retrieved on September 28, 2026, names four partners: "AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, and Singular." You "use the attribution link generated by your measurement partner" in the campaign, and "Attribution for these integrations is click-based" (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). On Adjust, you need SDK v4.0.0 or later, and it sends installs, sessions and in-app events (Adjust Help, 2026).

Campaigns can also target the ChatGPT iOS app on its own. Watch the naming: ios_app is "The native ChatGPT app on iOS," where the ad shows, not your app (OpenAI Developers, Platform Targeting, 2026).

Unique insight: an install event is not an install objective

A Conversions campaign optimizes toward one standard event; custom events can't be goals. app_installed is standard, yet OpenAI's examples list only order_created, lead_created and registration_completed. Not documentedWe found no statement either way on optimizing for installs, so check in Ads Manager first. Even then, you pay per click, much like Apple Ads' own target-CPA bidding, which bills per tap.

What's missing, and who can't advertise?

Not documentedWe found no app-install objective, no App Store-style ad unit with icon, rating and Get button, and no "open the App Store" action. Sponsored Agents, a US test announced on September 16, ends with a link "to the business's website" (OpenAI, 2026), so it isn't an install format either.

Confirmed · OpenAIDestinations are a real hurdle. OpenAI warns that app-store links, deep links and "unsupported redirects may not provide enough crawlable content for validation or review." Its advice: "Use a directly reachable web landing page whenever possible" (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). Plan for a web page, or an MMP link that passes review.

Confirmed · OpenAISome categories are out. OpenAI's ad policy (v1.6, September 2026) prohibits dating apps and gambling. Financial and health services need case-by-case approval, while "budgeting apps, general financial software" are allowed. OpenAI can also refuse advertisers that conflict with its "business interests, or competitive position" (OpenAI Ad Policies, 2026). ReportedCiting The Information, PYMNTS reported that rival image- and audio-generation tools can no longer advertise (PYMNTS, September 10, 2026). AI photo and voice apps should check first.

How do ChatGPT ads compare with Apple Ads?

They catch people at different moments. Apple Ads reaches people inside the App Store, and a tap opens your product page. That's why search-results ads convert a global median 56% of taps into installs (AppTweak, 2026). ChatGPT ads reach people mid-question, and a tap leaves ChatGPT for a web page or tracking link before the store.

Two paths to the same install

Right column, ChatGPT Ads, six steps: the user asks ChatGPT a question and reads the answer, neither visible to the advertiser; taps the ad card, which OpenAI logs; lands on a web page or MMP link, the extra hop, outlined in coral; reaches the App Store page, which OpenAI can't see; then taps Get and installs, which the MMP reports on a click basis. Each side has something the other lacks. ChatGPT reaches people before they open the store, while they're still describing the problem, and one buy covers iOS, Android and web. Apple Ads gives you Apple-reported installs down to the keyword, unless an ad group uses age or gender targeting, from people one tap away from Get.

Unique insight: don't compare CTR with tap-to-install

The funnel has an extra hop, so the only fair comparison is cost per install, counted by the same MMP on the same definition. ChatGPT CTR data is thin anyway. ReportedOne Adthena client saw a 0.91% CTR against a 6.4% Google Search benchmark in its sector (Campaign US, March 19, 2026). That's one advertiser with a web goal in a pilot month.

What could a ChatGPT install cost, and what bid can you afford?

Nobody has published an app-install CPI for ChatGPT Ads. Confirmed · OpenAIOpenAI's help center says: "For CPC campaigns, we recommend starting with a maximum bid of $3–$5 USD per click" (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). The auction sets the actual price, which can land below your max. So the math starts from the click.

ReportedAdweek reported, citing an OpenAI spokesperson, that OpenAI asked select pilot advertisers to commit at least $200,000 (Adweek, 2026). The Information reported a $60 CPM (via PPC Land, 2026). Self-serve dropped the minimum on May 5 (Axios, 2026). In August, one agency executive told MediaPost he paid about $7 a click for 60 clicks and no purchases (MediaPost, August 28, 2026). Treat it as one data point.

Confirmed · OpenAIIn a Conversions campaign, max_bid_micros "is the CPA bid even though billing uses valid clicks," and "the auction determines the actual CPC" (OpenAI Developers, Conversion-Optimized Campaigns, 2026).

So add one formula to your Apple Ads math: CPI = CPC ÷ click-to-install rate, where click-to-install spans the web step and the product page. Set your target CPI from the break-even bid formula or the free Apple Search Ads calculator, then read off the rate a click needs.

Click-to-install rate needed to hit a target CPI. Required rate = CPC ÷ target CPI; our arithmetic. The $4.06 median is AppTweak's 2026 US search-results figure; the $7 CPC is one agency's report to MediaPost, 2026.
Unique insight: ChatGPT is unlikely to win on CPI

At a $3 click, matching the US Apple Ads median cost per install needs 74% of clicks to install. Apple Ads search results reach a 55% US median with the user already in the store (AppTweak, 2026), and ChatGPT's path has an extra hop. So set your ceiling from lifetime value, and judge ChatGPT on cohort value and incrementality. The figures are our arithmetic on public benchmarks.

What can you measure on iOS, and what can't you?

On iOS you get click-attributed installs through your MMP, and little else from OpenAI. Its docs say "App lifecycle events and mobile measurement integrations remain click-through-based," and the Conversions API takes Android's advertising ID only: "IDFA is not supported" (OpenAI Developers, 2026).

Our finding: what OpenAI's ads docs say about iOS

On September 28, 2026, we downloaded all 30 pages in the index of OpenAI's Ads developer docs as Markdown and ran a case-insensitive text search. "SKAdNetwork," "SKAN," "AdAttributionKit," "App Store" and "AppsFlyer" each matched 0 pages. "IDFA" matched 1, to say it isn't supported. The Insights reference adds that platform splits cover delivery only: "conversions aren't supported."

Confirmed · AppleApple's AdAttributionKit serves "registered advertising networks and developers," with a 30-day click and 24-hour view window and no ATT prompt (Apple Developer, 2026). Not documentedOpenAI documents none of it, and one vendor's claim of "SKAN 4.0 postbacks" cites no source. Ask your MMP how it matches iOS installs from ChatGPT clicks.

ReportedAt the July launch, AppsFlyer covered seven markets: the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan and South Korea (PPC Land, July 24, 2026). Its setup page now points instead to OpenAI's Ads Manager availability list, which covers where advertisers can be based (AppsFlyer, 2026). Confirm your market with your MMP.

An Apple-side read is possible if your MMP link ends on an App Store URL that keeps your pt and ct tokens. Not documentedWe found no OpenAI or MMP statement that the redirect preserves them, so test it on a device. If it does, App Analytics reports impressions, product page views, downloads, sales and subscriptions for that campaign, separate from OpenAI's and your MMP's counts. First-time downloads count "within 24 hours of using your campaign link," and each metric needs at least 5 (App Store Connect Help, 2026). The ct token takes up to 30 characters.

Taps from in-app links count as App Referrer, while a Safari redirect chain credits "the last URL in the chain" (App Store Connect Help, 2026). So ChatGPT clicks may show under the ChatGPT app or your MMP's domain; check App Store Connect's source types and the source type field during your device test.

ReportedBefore the AppsFlyer integration, Grubhub had only a "limited picture" of conversions and attribution, its VP of growth for paid media told Adweek (Adweek, August 2026).

How should an Apple Ads team run a first test?

Run it as a capped, four-week experiment with its own budget and a frozen Apple Ads baseline, judged on cost per MMP-attributed install and early cohort value. At OpenAI's suggested $3–$5 starting bids, every 1,000 clicks costs $3,000 to $5,000 at most. Don't fund it from Apple Ads, or you'll move the baseline you're measuring against.

This is our house protocol; we're not publishing results from it here.

  1. Check eligibility. Confirm your category is allowed and your MMP covers your target market.
  2. Wire measurement before spend. Connect your MMP with the Pixel ID and Conversions API key OpenAI requires. Create an App Store Connect campaign link with its own ct token, such as chatgpt-test-oct. Ask your MMP whether its iOS redirect keeps your pt and ct, then tap through on a device. Allow 24–48 hours for MMP reporting.
  3. Pick the destination. Use a crawlable web page that matches the conversation theme, or the MMP link if review accepts it. In the store, build a custom product page per traffic source that matches the same theme. Test page, token and redirect together.
  4. Structure the campaign. Run separate campaigns for ios_app and android_app, since platform splits don't cover conversions, in covered markets only. Start on Clicks. Move to Conversions only if Ads Manager offers your install or trial event as a goal and volume is steady. OpenAI says to "use a conversion event with enough volume," and a campaign's event can't change later. Draft context hints from the search terms that actually convert.
  5. Freeze the baseline. Keep Apple Ads spend within ±10%, the rule we use to hold paid spend steady during a read.
  6. Test for incrementality. OpenAI targets down to "states or regions, cities, markets, and postal codes where available" (OpenAI Help Center, 2026). Run ads in half your markets, hold out the rest and compare total installs, using the holdout test protocol. Watch for organic uplift too.
  7. Decide on Day 35. Continue if cost per MMP install, adjusted for D7 retention or trial starts, beats your Apple Ads break-even and the holdout shows lift. Otherwise pause and look again in 90 days.

Unique insight: your search terms are your first context hints

ChatGPT has no keyword bidding. Each ad group takes up to 2,000 context hints, and OpenAI says hints "are not exact-match keywords" (OpenAI Developers, 2026). So rewrite your converting Apple Ads terms as the jobs behind them: "track shared expenses with a partner," not "budget app."

What voids most tests? Judging on CTR, treating MMP installs and Apple's AdServices installs as one definition, running where your MMP has no coverage, and cutting Apple Ads brand campaigns to pay for it.

Run this yourself: where do app ads send people?

Run a fixed panel of app-seeking prompts, such as "best app to learn Spanish," from your own Free-plan accounts. Age them two weeks first: in one audit, the median account saw its first ad after 14 days (Lurie et al., arXiv, 2026). Log each advertiser, the final URL after redirects, and whether it also appears in the answer.

What's confirmed, what's reported, and what are we watching?

OpenAI documents the platform mechanics. Nobody documents app-install performance yet: we found no public case study with an install CPI. Here's the ledger as of September 28, 2026. We'll refresh this post by January 15, 2027, or sooner if something on the watch list changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you run app install ads on ChatGPT?

Not as a dedicated objective. As of September 28, 2026, ChatGPT Ads offers Views (CPM), Clicks (CPC) and Conversions, which bills per valid click, with impression billing in beta. You can measure installs by sending the app_installed event through OpenAI's Conversions API, usually from an MMP such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch or Singular.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost per click?

OpenAI's help center recommends starting CPC campaigns at a maximum bid of $3–$5 per click, and the auction sets the actual price. Self-serve buying has had no minimum spend since May 5, 2026. One agency executive told MediaPost he paid about $7 per click in August 2026. No public app-install CPI exists yet.

Does ChatGPT Ads support SKAdNetwork or AdAttributionKit?

Not in its documentation. On September 28, 2026, none of the 30 pages of OpenAI's Ads developer docs mentioned either. OpenAI says app events and MMP integrations are click-through-based, and its Conversions API accepts Android's advertising ID but not IDFA. Ask your MMP how it matches iOS installs before you spend.

Which MMPs work with ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI's help center lists AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch and Singular. You use the link your MMP generates as the ad's destination, attribution is click-based, and OpenAI says to allow 24–48 hours for reporting. AppsFlyer and Adjust went live in July 2026 in seven markets, per PPC Land, so confirm current coverage with your MMP.

Should ChatGPT ads replace Apple Ads spend?

No. Apple Ads reaches people already in the App Store, converts a global median 56% of search-results taps into installs (AppTweak, 2026) and reports installs down to the keyword, except for age- or gender-targeted ad groups. ChatGPT Ads catches people earlier and is harder to measure on iOS. Fund a capped test from new budget instead.

Will buying ChatGPT ads make ChatGPT recommend my app?

No. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and it keeps them labeled and separate. In SE Ranking's July 2026 US sample, the advertiser's site appeared among the answer's cited sources in just 3.63% of ad placements. Earning organic recommendations is a separate job; see our GEO guide for apps.
