Search Intent

Discovery & ranking

Search Intent is the goal behind a store search — finding a specific app, comparing options in a category, or solving a particular problem — and it shapes which listing and message will convert.

Store queries fall into rough groups. Branded or navigational searches name an app the user already wants. Generic or category searches ("budget app") come from a shopper comparing options. Feature or problem searches ("split rent with roommates") describe a specific job to be done and, in our experience, often come from users closest to a decision. Both stores now let listings respond to intent directly: on the App Store, keywords from the latest approved version can be assigned to custom product pages, and Apple advises that they "match the intent" of each page; on Google Play, custom store listings can target users by search term.

Intent shapes keyword choice and creative together. Apple Ads describes search terms as "the strongest intent signal you can get," and the same logic holds organically: in our experience, a listing that answers the query's goal in its first screenshot converts better than one that merely contains the word. Practitioners sort target keywords into intent groups, reserve the highest-weighted fields for the problem terms the app solves best, and give broader category traffic a broader pitch. Our custom product page framework shows how to map pages to intent.

Example

A meal-planning app finds three intents in its keyword set: "meal planner" (category), "high protein meal prep" (problem) and its own name (branded). It assigns the protein terms, already in its approved keyword field, to a custom product page led by macro-tracking screenshots, while the default page keeps a broader weekly-planning pitch.
