Developer Response is a public reply a developer posts to a user review through App Store Connect or Google Play Console, shown with the review on the store and notifying the reviewer.
On the App Store, responses are written in App Store Connect's Ratings and Reviews section, or through its API, by users with the Account Holder, Admin, or Customer Support role. Each review shows one response, which can be edited or deleted at any time; edited responses are marked as edited, and a response can take up to 24 hours to appear. On Google Play, Play Console allows one public reply per review, editable at any time, and Google's reply API caps replies at 350 characters. On both stores the reviewer is notified and can then update their review and rating.
Replies work on two audiences. The reviewer may revise a low rating once an issue is fixed — Google says responding to a negative review can raise that rating by an average of 0.7 stars — and prospective users read replies as evidence of an attentive team. Apple's guideline 5.6.1 asks that responses stay respectful and targeted to the user's comments, with no personal information, spam, or marketing. Practitioners prioritize recent critical reviews that describe fixable issues, reply when the fix ships, and report abusive or spam reviews instead of answering them.
Example
A banking app receives a one-star review about a crash at login. When the fix ships, the support team replies naming the version that resolves it and inviting the user to update. The reviewer is notified, confirms the fix, and revises the review to four stars.
