Seasonal Keywords are search terms whose demand peaks around predictable dates — New Year fitness, holiday gifting, back-to-school — making them valuable for weeks and wasted space the rest of the year.
Seasonal terms follow the calendar: fitness and budgeting searches around January, gift and travel terms before the December holidays, study tools in late summer. Apple names the category directly, noting that trending or seasonal terms such as "Christmas" or "summer" may drive a lot of traffic but are highly competitive, especially for newer or smaller apps. The timing problem is mechanical. On the App Store, the name, subtitle and keyword field change only with a new app version and App Review; on Google Play, listing edits are reviewed too, and Google says processing can take up to seven days, or longer in exceptional cases.
The discipline is to ship ahead of the peak, not into it. Teams submit the seasonal version early and use App Store Connect's option to release automatically no earlier than a chosen date, or Play Console's managed publishing to hold approved changes until launch day. Lower-friction levers carry the message in between: promotional text updates without a submission but isn't indexed for search, while In-App Events are reviewed independently of app versions and can be promoted up to 14 days before they start. A fitness app plans for January in November: it submits a build whose subtitle and keyword field add "new year" and "resolution", set to release no earlier than December 26. A "30-Day Reset" In-App Event carries the theme on the store, and a February build restores the evergreen terms.
